email tutorial for apple mail

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  1. An e-mail account from FairPoint Communications. Don't have one? If you recieve FairPoint High-Speed Internet, you're entitled to up to 5 e-mail accounts with that connection. If you don't have an e-mail account, or would like to set up another, send an e-mail to netops275@fairpoint.com and include "NEW ADDRESS" in the subject.
  2. Mail. The Mail program comes bundled along with Mac OS X. This tutorial was created with the Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" version of Mail.
STEP 1:
In Mail, click on the "Mail" menu and choose "Preferences."

STEP 2:
Click on the "Accounts" section from the top, and click on the "+" icon at the bottom.

STEP 3:
This will start an automatic new account process. The account type will need to be set to "POP". The account description will be whatever you make it; it's merely there for your convenience. Type your full name, which will appear on any mail you send. Type in your e-mail address below that. Click "Continue".

STEP 4:
On this next screen, you'll need to type in "pop3.uniteone.net" for the Incoming Mail Server. Your user name is the first part of your e-mail address (i.e., if your e-mail address was userid@uniteone.net, your user name would be userid). Type in the password we supplied you, and then click "Continue".

STEP 5:
The Outgoing Mail Server is "smtp.uniteone.net". Check "Use Authentication" and type in the same user name and password as you did on the previous step.

STEP 6:
This next screen shows an account summary. Make sure that all the information displayed is correct. If so, click "Continue".

STEP 7:
Click "Done" unless you want to set up another account. In that case, click on "Create Another Account" and go back to Step 3.

You're all set! To check for any mail, click the "Get Mail" button at the top of the screen, or if you want to type an e-mail, click on the "New" button.
