email tutorial for
     outlook express

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  1. An e-mail account from FairPoint Communications. Don't have one? If you recieve FairPoint High-Speed Internet, you're entitled to up to 5 e-mail accounts with that connection. If you don't have an e-mail account, or would like to set up another, send an e-mail to netops275@fairpoint.com and include "NEW ADDRESS" in the subject.
  2. Microsoft Outlook Express. This is a pre-installed component of Windows.
STEP 1:
In Outlook Express, click on the "Tools" menu on the menu bar and click on "Accounts...".

STEP 2:
Click on the "New" button, and then click "Mail" from the menu that appears.

STEP 3:
This will bring up a portion of the "Internet Connection Wizard". It'll first ask you for your display name. This is the name people will see when you send them e-mail.

STEP 4:
The next step will ask you for your e-mail address. This is the e-mail address we supplied you.

STEP 5:
The next step will ask you for your e-mail server names. The screenshot below shows the exact setup you need. Our server is a POP3 server. The INCOMING server should be set to "pop3.uniteone.net" and the OUTGOING server should be set to "smtp.uniteone.net".

STEP 6:
The next step asks you for your Account Name and your password. This is where you'll need to input the info that we gave you. You'll also want to check the Remember password box if you don't want to keep typing in your password every time you send/recieve mail. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is NOT checked.

STEP 7:
Verify this information is correct, and click the Next button. This will finish the wizard. You're almost done! With your mail account highlighted (it should be titled pop3.uniteone.net), click the Properties button.

STEP 8:
On the General tab (the tab that is currently open), double-check everything here to make sure it's correct, and then proceed to the Servers tab.

STEP 9:
Make sure that the server type is a POP3 server and that the incoming server is set to "pop3.uniteone.net" and the outgoing server is set to smtp.uniteone.net. Also, make sure that your account name is correct. Your password will be in there as well if you chose to have Outlook/Outlook Express remember your password. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is NOT checked, and then CHECK THE BOX LABELED My server requires authentication. Once you do this, the Settings button will be selectable, but don't click on it. You won't need to change the default settings.

You're all finished! Click OK, and then click Close to close the Internet Accounts window. To check for any mail, click the Send/Recv button at the top of the screen, or if you want to type an e-mail, click on the Create Mail button.
